Unlocking Potential
We can find countless stories of individuals in the Bible and through history who achieved extraordinary things. From David beating Goliath to Esther saving her people, from Captain Sully landing a plane on the Hudson River to the heroics of American soldiers on the battlefield protecting freedoms, these narratives inspire us to reach our own potential. But how do we reconcile these inspiring stories with the realities of our own lives? How do we tap into the wellspring of God's grace to reach the potential He has placed within us?
First, we must understand that potential is a gift from God. In Genesis 1:27, we are told that we are created in His image, imbued with inherent capabilities and a divine spark. This isn't about our own self-glory, but rather it is about recognizing the potential for greatness that God has placed within each of us.
However, potential is just the seed. A seed takes continued nourishment, cultivation, and faith to blossom into its full potential. Without this, the seed will not grow. To help achieve this we can:
Seek God's Guidance: Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." Discerning God's will for our lives is paramount. Prayer and continued reflection are crucial tools in this pursuit.
Embrace Your Gifts: The parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) reminds us that God bestows unique gifts upon each of us. Identifying and nurturing these gifts is essential. Perhaps you have a talent for music, a passion for teaching and the youth or an entrepreneurial spirit. Whatever your gifts may be, use them to glorify God and serve others.
Conquer Self-Doubt: Fear and insecurity can be significant roadblocks to reaching our potential. The Bible is filled with verses that encourage us to combat these feelings. Philippians 4:13 assures us, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." Remember, God doesn't call the equipped, He equips the called. Trust in His strength to overcome self-doubt.
Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Growth often happens just beyond our comfort zone. Challenge yourself to take on new experiences and responsibilities. The discomfort you feel initially can pave the way for significant personal and spiritual development.
Surround Yourself: Proverbs 27:17 says, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." Continually surround yourself with people who you can learn from, offer feedback to you, encourage you relentlessly and always be there no matter what is going on. We need positive influences in our life now more than ever.
Celebrate Small Victories: The road to reaching your potential is paved with small triumphs. Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how seemingly insignificant. Small victories create monumental long-term achievements.
Give Back: As you grow and develop your gifts, use them to uplift others. Serving your community, volunteering your time, or mentoring others are all ways to honor God and fulfill your potential.
Remember, reaching your potential is not about earthly achievements or worldly recognition. It is about becoming the best version of yourself that God created you to be. It's about using your gifts to glorify Him and serve others. With faith, perseverance, and reliance on God's grace, you can unlock the potential He has placed within you and live a life that truly shines His light.
God does not call us to be perfect or do things outside of our abilities and circumstances. He wants us to continually be faithful, learn from mistakes and keep moving forward. We are on a lifelong journey full of ups and downs. Embrace the journey, enjoy every season and anchor yourself in faith. Your full potential is one that can change the world!
